Letter from John Moore to William F. Weeks, October 2, 1863
Writing from Mansfield to Weeks (in Houston), Moore reports of news that the federal troops sent to Berwick Bay are destined for Texas on the Red River. “Col. Offutt & the Prescotts are in the Parish of Sabine near Mary looking out for places for their negroes either in Louisiana or Texas near the border. Some Refugees are said to be on the Road near this returning from Texas stating that they were so badly treated there that they could not remain, extortion in the prices of all necessaries were practised upon them. I have been looking at some places near the Sabine to locate our negroes but as yet have seen none that pleased.” He has heard that corn is selling at $10 a bushel near Waco, Texas. “I can not stand such extortion.” He reports that “our slaves are getting healthy again, and we are now doing a little picking cotton &c. &c.” C. C. Weeks is “intent on going to Texas unless you write to him advising him otherwise.”
