Title

"Allie" to John Moore, September 22, 1863

Description

She thanks him for his recent heartfelt sympathy on the death of her son. She expected Bud (William F. Weeks) to be back already and hopes the delay is not because of sickness. She hopes that Bud is able to persuade him "if possible to return hom. I think you would be so much more comfortable there than you are in or near Mansfield. You could always get away before the Federals could get there." A Mr. Rawlins has returned and has been looking for a place for them. "He got a place in Freestone Co. about 100 miles south east of this place" near a place "called Cotton Gin, which will be our Post Office." He says that it is a healthy location with plenty of water and he can get "land enough around the place for Mrs Brashears and my forces to cultivate it, pays no money, but gives one third of what we make [as] rent." It is near Mr. Hewitts, of the house of Hewitt Norton & Co., who is living on a rented place with his family, and who advised them to close on the deal because "places were in great demand, and were difficult to obtain." Rawlins is waiting to see WF Weeks after he returns, but as soon as they talk, "he will start for the prairie, move the hands immediately, and go to putting up more cabins, and [out houses?]. It has some six or seven cabins on it, and a small dwelling house. They will add to the house and put up a sufficient number of cabins. The place has plenty of wood on it." Mr. Weightman has returned and says he saw Bud in Shreveport on Saturday.
