Letter from Ben Prescott to John Moore, September 11, 1863
Writing from Sun Flower Plantation, Ben Prescott, Moore’s grandson, reports that “we expect to leave here for Texas about the last of the month as I hope by that time the health of the Negroes will admit of it. I have now on this place the measles, there are now 25 or 30 cases in the quarter. None have died.” He plans to go “direct to Anderson, Grimes Co., will try to locate on the Brazos. I think I can reach Anderson in three weeks after leaving here.” He has teams “engaged in hauling for Govt & will keep them at it until I am ready to leave.” He predicts that the country will soon be abandoned by our troops.
