Article on Slaves Found by Union Troops at Brashear City
In this article, the New York Herald takes notice of a letter from Gen, Godfrey Weitzel to Department of the Gulf headquarters about “Four Hundred Wagonloads of Negroes” left behind by evacuating Confederates in Brashear City. Although Weitzel’s report was silent about the possible reasons why this large number of enslaved people had been assembled, the Herald claims that “the rebels had been gathering them up to carry them farther into the interior, or perhaps to Texas, or perhaps with the intention of slipping them over to Cuba.”
