Description

In this September 1863 broadside, the Office of the Chief Quartermaster in the Trans-Mississippi Department calls for Confederate slaveholders in Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas, to hire out 2,000 to 3,000 "able-bodied men" to the government, promising to compensate slaveholders for "any servants that may be killed by the enemy."
