Hon. John Moore
Shreveport, La.
Dear Sir
While at W. F. Weeks’ camp last week, he placed in my hands several letters recently received from you for me to read, one of which contained announcement of the great bereavement which has befallen you in [connection?] with each and every member of the family. I had had tidings of it previous to that, thro a letter from A. C. Weeks. It is unnecessary for me to say the shock was great, coming, as it did, wholly unexpected.
I was pleased to learn from another that you had been reelected to the Senate. I have done well I think in coming to Texas. I have hired my negroes to Skaggs men at $50 per month, women at $25 & boys at $25. I hired them by the month, as labor will be higher, when cotton picking commences. My carts I took to Mr. T. C. Bethell to have converted into wagons. They are now done & I will go for them on Tuesday next. Government has offered me $10 a day for a wagon team & driver, with all expenses paid, which I accepted, there being no alternative, as they would have been pressed had I declined. I have by the arrangement I accepted the privilege of bringing loads on my own account, salt, sugar, or whatever I choose & my mules are fed, [illegible] goes on & all expenses paid by Government. I am to haul from Huntsville (clothing manufactured in the penitentiary for soldiers) to Shreveport. I am now at a place, near Huntsville, rented by W. F. Weeks.
Hoping this may find you in the enjoyment of good health. I remain, Yours truly,
C. C. Weeks

I have been ordered to hold myself & wagons in readiness to go to “San Antonio.” From there I am told I will be ordered to Shreveport. Please let Maggie know you have heard from me.
