Letter from John F. Leigh to John Moore, November 7, 1862
Leigh talks of a recent three-week trip he has made to Texas (Crockett?) and the illnesses that his wife, Addy, and others suffered on the way. He “did not succeed in any of my enterprises,” finding that there were no hogs good enough to be driven and no beeves for sale. His overseer has only put up forty acres of seed cane, and grinding is about to begin at Lone Cypress, the plantation he writes from. He urges Moore to come up and stay with them as the federals are approaching his area.
