October 31st 1865

My dear Papa,

Nothing of interest has transpired since you left the Island. We commenced last Wednesday morning to [furrow?] the Cane and without the hands work very slowly. [I] yet hope to secure [illegible] before a frost. Mr. [illegible] has completed the [Bill?] & [illegible] for the house and Brother has it [illegible] whenever [illegible] and [canes?] can be [exposed?]. ...

As I understand furniture of all kinds is very high in New Orleans. I thought it would be well for me to pay the Dr a visit and forward you a list of the kind quantity and price of his furniture. I drove down to Mr. Richardson's on Saturday ...

The Carriage is now at the door and we will leave for the Island in a few moments. While I think of it I must ask as a favor that you will give Cousin Bob the right to merchandize on the Island should the Company cary on operations on a scale to remunerate him. He seems to be anxious to have the right unless you have already given it to someone else. ...

Please send me also two boxes of Gun [wads?] No 12 and two No 11. Also a five pound Canister of powder. I hope that Sister's health is better since your arrival in New Orleans. ...
